Jewel in the Palace - Episode 54 (Final Episode)

July 7, 2005

Jang-Geum asks the king for permission to cut him open to manually open up his blocked organs, since it’s the only method to save him. The king is shocked by the idea. Doctor Jung and Doctor Shin insist Jang-Geum cannot do such thing. Jang-Geum shows the doctors the rabbit she saved through surgery. The doctors ask how the rabbit could’ve endured such pain. Jang-Duk and Jang-Geum explain she used a needle to numb the nerve nearby. Jang-Geum demonstrates what she means on a fish. Lady queen asks Jang-Geum if it’s true that she suggested cutting open the king. Jang-Geum replies yes and the lady queen scolds her saying it is an unprecedented impossibility and even mentioning it is an offense against the king.

The king’s generals plead to the king to receive treatment from nae-ee-ohn doctor instead of Jang-Geum who is pushing her limits riding on the king’s favor. The king, barely gathering enough strength to talk, tells his generals to leave. Outside the generals run into Jang-Geum. the head general tells Jang-Geum they will not give up easily. Jang-Geum begs the king to accept her treatment. The king senses his death coming and smiles at Jang-Geum instead of answering her. JangGgeum states she truly wants to save him. The king replies it cannot be done. No matter how skilled she is she cannot save a dead man. The king tells Jang-Geum she is a great doctor worthy of being loved. Jang-Geum, with tears begs the king to agree to her treatment again. The king states when he goes to sleep he can hear Jang-Geum’s words circling his ears and he can rest well.

The king studies Jang-Geum as she tends to him. The king smiles at jang-geum. Jang-Geum leaves and outside the head guard tells her to follow her. A few guards wait for Jang-Geum and one of them covers her head with white sheet. Jang-Geum is taken to a boat and sent away to where Min Jung Ho farms. The king has arranged for their meeting. Back at palace the generals are angry Jang-Geum has disappeared.

Jang-Geum and Min Jung Ho embrace. The guard tells Min Jung Ho to receive the king’s order. Min Jung Ho bows and kneels to receive the king’s order. Tthe king instructs Min Jung-Ho to go to the nation of Ming Dynasty and tell Jang Geum he sends his gratitude and apology, as well as his blessing for her to learn more medicines in a even bigger country. Jang-Geum is reluctant to get on the boat to leave without trying to save the king, but the guard states it is the king’s order. Then, they hear the citizens cry out in front of the bullentin board as they read about the news that the king has risen to the heavens. Jang-Geum is upset and runs toward the soldiers to go back to palace. The guard grabs a wanted ad for Jang-Geum and orders Min Jung-Ho and Jang-Geum to leave at once for the king would not have wanted Jang-Geum to be captured. Min Jung Ho takes Jang-Geum away as the guard tries to distract the on-coming soildiers.

[8 years later, year 1550 A.D., remote town in outskirts of Joseon Dynasty]

A little girl named So-Won runs toward her father, Min Jung-Ho, with dirt on her clothes. Her mother, Jang-Geum, appears from behind the girl. So-Won is scared and Jang-Geum is angry. Jang-Geum punishes her daughter for going out without permission but Jung-Ho saves So-Won before she can be punished even more. The little daughter is full of curiosity just like the little Jang-Geum.

Jang-Geum practices medicine by saving whoever is sick in town. So-Won goes along Jang-Geum to help her whenever she is called to see a patient. Min Jung-Ho teaches writing and reading to local kids. On this day, So-Won runs to tell her father that the villagers are bullying Jang-Geum for wanting to do a caesarian on a pregnant mother. On her way, So-Won runs into Kang Duk-Goo who asks about where Jang-Geum is. The little girl points to the wrong direction and runs back home to tell her father about her mother and the strange man who’s looking for her.

Min Jung-Ho starts packing their stuff, and the father and daughter go to town to grab Jang Geum, and the three start running on foot. Kang Duk-Goo sees Jang-Geum and her family but they disappear before he can catch up to them.

Kang Duk-Goo returns to Han-Yang city and reports his sighting to his wife and to Jang-Duk. Both women are happy that Jang-Geum and Jung-Ho are still living in Joseon (Korea) with their little daughter. Yun-Saeng goes to see the queen and begs her to pardon Jang-Geum. The queen replies too bad Jang-Geum is in nation of Ming, if she were still in Joseon, she would’ve brought her back to palace. Yun-Saeng reports Jang-Geum has been in Joseon all these years. The queen is pleasantly surprised. Chan-Ee, now a sang-goong and Lady Min are relieved and happy by the queen’s response.

So-Won continues to help her mother with her medicine practice. On this day, So-Won walks back home with Jang-Geum after treating an elderly. So-Won hides behind Jang-Geum when she sees her father running toward them. Jung-Ho worrily tells Jang-Geum that So-Won is missing. Jang-Geum tries to hold her laugh as So-Won teases her father. When they go back, they see soildiers surrounding their home. They have come to bring them back to the palace.

Jang-Geum and Jung-Ho are given their old attire and escorted back to Han-Yang city in a wagon. As they enter the palace, So-Won asks questions non-stop as she is surprised by everything she sees.

Jang-Geum and Jung-Ho reunite with their former colleages as the staff of nae-ee-ohn, the cooks of soo-rak-gan, and the upper generals of the palace circle them with smile and nods. The queen arrives telling Jang-Geum and Jung-Ho how happy she is to see them and why they have lived in exile all these years. The queen states the king was proud of them both and felt bad about what happened to Min Jung-Ho. The queen states she will give Jang-Geum and Min Jung-Ho their old position back and asks them to return to the palace.

Lady Min, Yun-Saeng, and Chan-Ee are astonished by how similar So-Won is to Jang-Geum as a child. So-Won continues to entertain them with her non-stop chatter about everything her mother has taught her. Jang-Geum and Jung-Ho bring So-Won to see the Kang Duk Gu and his wife and Jang-Duk. Kang Duk-Goo and So-Won recognize each other immediately and Duk-Goo understands why she reminded him of Jang-Geum when he ran into her in the remote city.

Jung-Ho asks Jang-Geum whether she wants to return to the palace or go back to where they’ve been living. Both decide to leave. Jang-Geum tells the queen her decision. The lady queen replies she is sad but will respect her wish.

Jang-Geum gives the palace one last look and steps outside its gates to her awaiting husband and daughter. The three start to walk back to where they came from. Jung-Ho asks Jang-Geum what palace meant to her. Jang-Geum replies the palace gave her the chance to cook and the chance to practice medicine, but it also took away Lady Jung and Lady Han from her. The palace was a place that made her feel she had everything when in fact she had none, a place that made her feel like she could do anything when she couldnt’ do anything. Jang-Geum states the palace was a sad place for her. Min Jung Ho smiles and asks if the road they travel is not sad. Jang-Geum replies yes. Jung-Ho is happy but tells Jang-Geum even so she cannot cut open people since such practice is still not accepted in Joseon. Jang-Geum replies it should be since it can save lives.

Then they discover So-Won is missing. But So-Won runs toward them to tell Jang-Geum a woman nearby is in pain. Jang-Geum and Jung-Ho follow So-Won to the lady’s place. The woman is in difficult labor and will die from giving birth. Jang-Geum tells Jung-Ho surgery is the only chance to save both mother and baby and Jung-Ho follows her instructions.

Jang-Geum successfully saves both mother and baby by doing a caesarian delivery. Jang-Geum, Jung-Ho, and So-Won sit by the woman and smile as they welcome the new born into life.

  4. I just started watching the movie on cable TV and so I’m catching up with the reading because I missed the beginning, but some of the episodes are missing, what should I do? It saids next page, but there’s nothing display on the next page. Help!!! Thanks.

  7. This is the best show I ever watched in my whole life. I cried a lot during scenes when the evil choi family did bad things to good people . I wish they will make an english speaking version of this show instead of having to read subtitltes. Is everything in the show true?????????? Jennifer.

  16. Apparently there was a real person in Korean history named Min Jeong-Ho…but he had no relation with Jang Geum. I don’t know about this statement though cos there isn’t much written about Jang Geum in Korean history, except for the few excerpts made by the king (which shows you how much he believed in her skills!)

  19. This story is inspiring and interesting. Basically what’s so beautiful about it is that it explains a lot of life situations. Jang Geum for example is a woman who never gives up on herself or other people around her. She is a good example of a very forgiving person as she forgave those who killed her mother and court lady Han. Very beautiful story, I could go on watching forever haha (ok Now im trying 2 write diplomaic ok) same as ymca (or what ever) i agree i also wish it would show forever hehe

  22. Dae Jang Geum drama is currently on air in Thailand every weekend. The impressive storyline, terrific cast, and wonderful soundtrack altogether make Dae Jang Guem a worth watching show.

  32. i am from the philippines and i love watching jewel in the palace everynight eventhough its very late i still make it a point that i dont miss a single episode because i was hooked by its well written story and specially their costumes and the beutiful looking actors&actresses . i am hoping that the lead actress will visit the philippines i am looking forward for that time to see her in person . i am proud to admit that i am a jewel fanatic viva jang geum long live.

  35. I love daejanggeum a lot, especially its characters. Perfect for their roles! I especially like Ji Jin Hee. He’s so charming and cute! Watched Love Letter but disappointed he didn’t end up with Eun Ha. I wanted him to be her love interest. Hope he and lee young ae visit the Philippines. Will watch Perhaps Love to support him.

  36. Dae Jang Geum is the best Korean Drama Series i’ve seen. No wonder it’s a hit in every country where it was aired. The story is perfect and the actors are fit for their roles.   42. I loved this story and I actually watched it 4 times on the very last episode… Does anybody know where I can get the Cantonese version of Dae Jang Geum? I’ve tried looking in Vancouver, but they’re really expensive. Any ideas where I can get the whole set cheaper than 100.00$

  48. Dae Jang-geum is truly a great T.V. miniseries. Unlike other dramas presented on T.V., DJG presents a lot of moral lessons and quests for dignity. And, it doesn’s go simply around a mere love story.

    Although little is known about Jang geum historically, (some even say that the miniseries is a hagiography of great female physician), DJG is trully a great T.V. show!!!!!!!!! So thanks for the producers and writers who substanciated into a drama the life of such a great woman!!!

    In a ranking of 1 to 10, I give that show an 11!!!

    Grabe talaga! Super ganda to the max!

    and how to raise a child. To be a good person regardless of your status in life. More power to the writter of this novel story. Sana mapanood din ito ng mga politician natin para matoto sila maging honest and commitment sa pagpapalakad ng ating gobyerno.

  53. this series just gave me the best lessons in life. i really like the actress and actors, the ending was really great… (although i really wished it wouldn’t end) sigh… that’s life.. everything that is great also has to end. just like jewel in the palace… the best series ever made.

  72. Its the greatest koreanovela ive ever watched. Marami kong natutunan when it comes with foods. kung ano ung mga pagkain or halaman na nakakagamot ng sakit pati na rin ung mga nakakasama. Ive also learned about their govenrment. Uso na rin pla mga katiwalian noon. Sana marami pang gantong palabas na nagbibigay ng mga magagandang aral. I never miss a single episode.The story is very relevant and true enough, the political struggles of our country today are the same struggles in the grab of power that Jewel in the palace presents…The character of the choi family in the story is a reflection of the politicians(to whom it may concern) who do everything evil in the pursuit of personal/family interests. Thanks to GMA-7 Kapuso for bringing to us such wonderful story.Its the best story ever on primetime..I adored Jang-Geum and lady Han a lot..

  143. XY, the way I understood the story…
    Lady Han wanted to teach JG that water is the main fundamental and the core of all food. All water have different taste and uses depending on where it is from and to whom it will be served. 2nd part of your question about cleaning the dishes alone…since JG was from the lowly class, other young maids would shun and tease her. (I think the writer wanted to express the evils of a caste society that Korea was in at that time.) But it is here that Lady Han notices JG since she was cleaning the dishes using a boiled water to prevent food from spoiling…how smart of her.
    Overall, this is the best drama I have ever seen anywhere. The combination of music, acting, scripts, cinematography, and they way they blended all this into one drama is a dedication to the art of making drama.
    DJG is a drama I will remember for many many years. I want to ask all Asian drama makers to continue to produce fine products such as DJG that Asian culture and values are promoted worldwide.

  147. Tonite is the final epsiode of Da Chang Jin. I already watched it 2 days back as I need to work OT in office tonite :(

    DCJ is a show that really touches my heart. I was deeply moved by Chang Jin sincerity in helping ppl, her selfess act and her passion for the work that she has done. I have already ordered the DVD set to keep them so that when my sons grow up, I will introduce them to this show, which I think is both inspiring and educational.

    Many times I was moved to tears when something bad happened to Chang Jin and feel happy when the sky is cleared for her again. I would say that this is one of the best drama I have ever watched in my entire life.

    Last but not least, I would also like to introsuce the soundtrack of this show..the sub-theme is really nice and soothing. It brings me back to those memorable scenes whenever I play the songs in my car.

    All the best to the casts of this show. I’m sure I will watch it again in time to come.

  149. Here in the US (SF Bay area) DJG is being aired for the 3rd time and fast approaching the last episode #54. After having watched this show numerous times, I still enjoy watching it all over again.

    There appears to be something special about this show that is so different and special that it is unlike any other shows.

    Initially started watching this show thinking that it is simply a show about palace maids. I could not have been more wrong. It is a show about life, values, courage, perseverance, love, respect, morals, and so much more.

    I have truely come to respect those people who work so hard to create this drama DJG. DJG is perhaps one the finest display of art of making a drama. From script writer, director, musicians, actors..I could go on and on. All of you guys, you did hell of a job…..a job well done!

  174. Sascha, I will respond to your questions. The reason why there are 70 or 71 episodes in some countries is because of the difference in broadcasting time slot. Korea broadcasts about 55 min movie plus 5 min ad whereas other countries have 45 min movie and 15 min ad. Because each episodes have become shorter, number of episode have increased to 71. The actual content is virtually identical but 54 episode version is more enjoyable as the climax of the movie is the last 5 minutes whereas on a 45 min version, the climas is anywhere depending on where it is cut. The original format is the best.

It was aired from 5 pm - 6 pm here and I’m at work from 8.30 am - 5 pm.. :( But, I hope I could get the DVD.. so I could follow the whole episodes..

    i am from India, n jewel in the palace is wonderful serial, it’s very inspiring also, all the character in this serial are excellent, i love especially Le young ae, she is now my favorite actress, i am great fan of this serial n i use to watch this with my family, it’s awesome.

  239. I will be happy, today is my birthday, but this is not the case because today is also spent the last episode of Dae Jang Gum.
    Magnificent history, superb production, ancestral decor ,enchanting music and what about the actors especially the sublime Lee Ae young and talented and Ji Jin Hee Im Ho.
    I am sad but happy at the same time to discover a very beautiful country, with a beautiful culture and friendly people.
    I also discovered the Korean cinema, to say that not only American cinema exist, unlike the latter Korean cinema is more human, more realistic, more subtle I’ll even say more magical.
    Finally I wish every success in the world for all Dae Jang Gum’s team, special mention to Lee Young Ae you are sublime , continue to enchant us.

    Its really a beatiful story, mainly the lovestory is heart touching. The caring nature of Min Jung-Ho towards Jang-Geum makes it so real. It is the first series I like to see otherwise i never wacth serials.I congratulate all those who had contributed for this siries.Through this drama I am much atracted to Korean culture.

  244. We are now at episode 51 waiting for 52 and I couldn’t help myself but to go on and read upto the final episode. Thank you very much for this resource, it has been very helpful. The story is touching, inspiring and wow what a life Lee Young ae was. She endured all, one can wonder if one can truly pull through, we could have thrown in the flag when “when our mother died’, given up to the schemes of Lady Choi and company but she soldiered on. Thank you for an inspiring story. Now i know there are a lot of her movies, short films we haven’t seen in Zimbabwe. Can we have more. Also thank you for your team that actually came into Zimbabwe to see how the film was recieved, I believe they were extremely delighted.

  247. hey, this is one of the greatest tv dramas in the world. to the beautiful cast to the crew, i say a job well done. the tv series is inspirational and educative. i was addicted to the show that i would hate myself for missing one episode. by the way i want to know whats currently happening to sir min, jang geum, and shin b. i would happy to receive a photo of jang geum and wo son in my email. i think wo son would turn out to be a great actress.
