‘Daejanggeum’ to make inroads into the Middle East and Europe
August 19, 2005
As MBC drama ‘Daejanggeum’ makes inroads into the Middle East and Europe, the drama is expected to contribute to Hanryu (Korean wave) spread in the Middel East as well as Europe region.
In Southeast Asia, already Singapore, the Philippines, and Thailand’s broadcasting station are planning to air the Korean drama. Following Southeast Asia, MBC Production said that ‘Daejanggeum’ will be aired throughout the Iran region from the end of the year at the earliest via an agreement with IRIB, Iran’s state-run broadcasting station.
An official responsible for oversea broadcasting marketing at MBC Production added, “Daejanggeum will be aired by means of terrestrial wave TV and satellite broadcast throughout the Arabic circle regions as well from the second half of the year.”
Following the Middle East region, ‘Daejanggeum’ is scheduled to be aired in Europe region too, taking aim at overseas Chinese in Europe.
The drama series “Daejanggeum”, like other famous historical TV drama series such as “Heojun” and “Sangdo”, has a similar storyline: the main character, despite many difficulties, overcomes them all and works one’s way to success.
What is outstanding about Daejanggeum is that the main character is a woman while the setting is in Joseon Dynasty, where the social role of women was very low. The character overcomes her difficulties through hard work. This is why the story is different from the others.
The main character, Seo Janggeum, spends her childhood with her parents in a town for butchers. Her parents live in the town secretly and avoid people because they were involved in a scandal.
One day, there is an incident in which the king kills many of his servants, and Janggeum has to part with her father while her mother dies. She enters the palace when she is 10 years old, and works hard to become the best cook in the palace.
However others plot against her and her teacher and mentor, Han. They are expelled from the palace and relegated to become maidservants at local government offices. Janggeum is sent to Jeju where she learns about medicine.
She later enters the palace again, and becomes the very first female doctor in the palace. She is the first woman in the history of Joseon Dynasty to become the king’s doctor.
In an ancient record called Jungjongsilloc, “dae (great)” was included in her name when she was referred to, and this shows the accomplishments she has made.

To the best actress of the world, Lady Lee young ae
Hi, when I start to write this letter, I thought very much about what I must write .First I want to express my interest to your really beautiful acting , I first saw you on ‘ Dae Jang Geum ‘ and I really attract to your acting and so I decide to know more about you and your films then I search about you on internet , for the first time I saw your pictures in web pages I really astonished .I am sure that you ask why this person become astonished when saw me in the internet , you know I said that I’m attract by your acting but what was I saw in the internet was your ( I’m really sorry ) body and your apparent form not your beautiful acting that I love it very much . Please let me expand my meaning, your apparent beauty will be fall by time run and your body become old as your apparent beauty but what is remain in the minds and souls is your acting and what you said in your dialog’s to guide people to welfare , I read a sentence in a book that I think it may be useful here , the sentence is : The people whom just proud because of their body will be forgotten when their body goes under the soil but the people whom proud because of their minds and souls will not be forgotten because their souls and words will not be goes under soil . I hopeful that my words don’t bother you , but I send this words for you ( just for you , not any other actress or actors ) because I saw something different in your eyes that I think is not from this world …
I will be glad if you send your opinion about my letter and maybe if we can talk about this issue that I think is very important.
