Appearance of several casts of Jewel in the Palace to promote Korean tourism and cuisine. In the event, little Jang Geum teaches audiences how to prepare some Korean dishes, signs signatures with smilies beside and gives away novel books about Dae Jang Geum.

Due to popularity of Jewel in the Palace drama, several actors and actresses in the Korean drama have been invited by Korean National Tourism Organization to China to promote Chinese tourists to visit Korea, in a series of events called “Korea Cultural Tourism - Finding Dae Jang Geum”. The three casts are Court Lady Choi Kyun Mi Ri, Little Jang Geum Jo Jung Eun and palace servant Li Jing Yuan (李京源).

Interview with Jo Jung Eun:

Jung Eun said she herself is very like to act in the movie, and temporarily don’t have the idea to study abroad. Later she promotes Korea as travel destination, “I recommended everybody to visit Jishan, the ginseng there is of high quality. It’s good for healthy even if eating as raw. When shooting the drama Jewel in the Palace, and now going everything to promote the drama are very tiring, and ginseng is my secret weapon, so my body is very healthy.” She also said she wants to be a good actress in future, as she really likes to act, thus has to forget old time dream to be pianist and writer.

Beside, she feel that she has grown mature. “Little Jang Geum is so thoughtful, after acting as her, I am more able to understand the feeling of parents. At home, I always helps to do house works, and becomes more thoughtful than last time.” Jo Jung Eun is only 10 years old. But she is so talkative, sharp thinking, and she admits it. “I am smart not because ate something. Because I myself is not a shy person, I have confident in myself, so when answering questions, I won’t feel nervous. I like others praise me, any praises will makes me happy. If you ask me if I feel myself is pretty or not, my answer is yes.”

When learnt that China’s children are very like her, she felt a bit shy, but thanks them. “Hope that everybody will live healthy and strong, and listen to the words of parents. In life there will be hardship, but we must be strong.”

Interview with Kyun Mi Ri:

Court Lady Choi no longer has the sinister expression in Jewel in the Palace, but looks solemn and beautiful. In her acting life for 20 years before Jewel in the Palace, she never acted as a bad character. After the drama, a lot of production companies approach her to act as bad woman.

There is rumour that Kyun Mi Ri is boycotted by Korean audiences because of the character of Court Lady Choi. She said, “There is no such thing. Viewers nowadays are rational, cast and one self are different matters. And a lot of people praise me indeed for good acting skills.” And because of changing to different role in Jewel in the Palace, Mi Ri attempts other role too. “Recently I also acted in comedy.”

After Jewel in the Palace, the biggest change is that audiences from a lot of countries start to know her, and then there is overseas production companies find her to act as villain. “Actually for me, Court Lady Choi is not a bad person, just that she felt too deep in her life.”

In Jewel in the Palace, the enemy of Court Lady Choi are Dae Jang Geum and Court Lady Han. Inside the drama, they are enemy, but out of the drama, they are friends. “Especially Lee Young Ae, she works hard even during the most critical and hard period. I learn a lot from this young girl.”

Beside, Kyung Mi Ri is expertised in cuisine too. “Although I know how to prepare common Korean cuisine, but a lot of kids prefer food prepared by their mums. I know how to do a cake most liked by kids. Korean food and beverage is very unique, other than stuffed dumpling and soup noodle, Korean snack shouldn’t be missed too.”

Interview with Li Jing Yuan:

He acted as palace servant in Jewel in the Palace, and he has expected to be just a supporting act on this trip to China. But it’s still a little bit awkward to face such an obvious ignore by the media.

So when there is question points to him, he is very excited and keep thanking. “I have wait for very long”, he said to the kind laughter. He said himself is also a fan of Lee Young Ae. “After coming to China, I meet with a lot of China female reporters, female writers directors, and I find that Chinese women is very tough too, also have the character of Jang Geum. He also said that China dramas have a kind of characteristics. “Just like in the drama ‘Genghis Khan’ that is popular in Korea, I feel some atmosphere that Korean dramas don’t have.

After the press conference, he approached that reporter to present a small gift, and expressed gratitute. “When I become famous celebrity, I will accept your interview only.”

Lee Young-ae Among Korea’s Top 10 Most Bankable Stars

October 25, 2005

Jang Dong-gun Voted Korea’s Most Bankable Star

Who is the most popular star in Chungmuro, Korea’s Hollywood? The Chosun Ilbo asked the country’s 12 most influential film producers, who are thought to be the most realistic in evaluating the commercial value of actors and actresses, “How many viewers do you think a movie will attract across the country if it stars a certain actor or actress?” Based on the results, we have listed the most 10 appealing actors and actresses. This is the third survey of its kind after 2002 and 2003.

Most Bankable Korea Celebrities
Clockwise from top left, Jang Dong-gun, Song Kang-ho, Kwon Sang-woo, Cha Seung-won, Cho Seung-woo, Kang Hye-jeong, Kim Sun-a, Lee Young-ae, Jun Ji-hyun and Moon Geun-yeong.

Jang Dong-gun and Moon Geun-yeong topped the list, with their pulling power estimated at 1.43 million people and 1.29 million people. Among the men, Jang was followed by Song Kang-ho, Kwon Sang-woo, Cha Seung-won and Cho Seung-woo, and among the women, Moon was followed by Jun Ji-hyun, Lee Young-ae, Kim Sun-a, and Kang Hye-jeong.

Picked by 10 out of 12 producers, Jang is now Korea’s most bankable actor. It seems the result reflects expectations for his movies “The Promise” and “Typhoon” scheduled for release late this year.

Moon, who has become the apple of everyone’s eye since she starred in the movie “My Little Bride” last year, emerged as a dark horse beating all-time favorite Jun Ji-hyun.

Han Suk-kyu, who ranked first in the first survey and 13th in the second, has dropped to 22nd place. Bae Yong-joon fell to a poor 28th place from sixth, showing that while he may be Japan’s favorite son-in-law, he certainly isn’t Korea’s.

Additional reporting from The New Paper on 25th October 2005:

Move over Bae Yong Joon - He’s the new hero

FILM producers love him as much as fans do.

Jang Dong-gun
Korea’s Jang Dong Gun is loved by fans and movie producers alike, drawing a whopping 11.7 million admissions for his recent movie.

Meet Jang Dong Gun, recently voted as South Korea’s Most Bankable Movie Star.

The 33-year-old actor is best known for his signature film, Brotherhood - the top-grossing Korean film of all time with 11.7 million admissions - and has two highly-anticipated upcoming titles, The Promise and Typhoon.

His pulling power is estimated to be 1.4 million people, according to a survey done by The Chosun Ilbo. It was based on the opinions of the country’s Top 12 most influential film producers.

Coming a close second is teen idol Moon Geun Young, 18, of Innocent Steps and My Little Bride fame. She attracts an estimated 1.3 million movie-goers.

Also in the Top 10 list: Jeon Ji Hyun (My Sassy Girl), Kwon Sang Woo (Love So Divine), Lee Young Ae (Sympathy For Lady Vengeance), Cha Seung Won (My Teacher Mr Kim), Kim Sun Ah (Wet Dreams), Cho Seung Woo (The Classic), Kang Hye Jung (Old Boy) and Song Kang Ho (JSA).

LEE BYUNG HUN NOT ON LIST

Interestingly, neither Bae Yong Joon nor his April Snow co-star, Son Ye Jin, made the list. He was ranked sixth last year, but fell to 28th position this year.

Also snubbed were Heavenly Kings Lee Byung Hun (A Bittersweet Life) and Won Bin (Brotherhood), despite their overwhelming popularity in Asia.

Instead, rising stars like Sang Woo and celebrity couple Seung Woo and Hye Jung are sizzling on the big screen.

Sang Woo has a notable new project, Running Wild, while Seung Woo and Hye Jung both scored at the box office this year with their films, Marathon (5.2 million admissions) and Welcome To Dongmakgol (7.1 million admissions) respectively.

Welcome was even selected as Korea’s nomination for Best Foreign Film at the upcoming Oscars.

All-time favourite Ji Hyun has a mega project, Daisy, coming up, which is directed by Hong Kong’s Andrew Lau (Infernal Affairs) and co-stars hunky Jung Woo Sung.

After her massive hit She’s On Duty, Sun Ah made a smashing crossover to TV with the Korean ratings champion, My Lovely Samsoon.

Also on a winning streak is Young Ae, whose historical drama, Jewel In The Palace, is taking China by storm. Last week, she also snagged a Best Actress award for Sympathy For Lady Vengeance at the Sitges International Film Festival in Spain.

Seung Won just turned in a hit in the action thriller, The Big Scene, while Kang Ho reportedly commands a guaranteed payment of up to 500 million won ($800,000).
