Ha Mang Yeon Lyric & Translation

July 17, 2005

Hamangyeon is sang by Alessandro Safina, an Italian, in Korean language. Hamangyeon is a poetic langaage that means “too far away… daze… boundless… limitless”.

Note: The first line is actual lyric in Korean, the second line is its spelling, the third line is what shown on TV in Taiwan/Hong Kong, the forth and the fifth line is the direct translation from the Korean lyric in English and Chinese. If there are more than 1 variant of translation it will be listed behind.

pa ra me ji neng a ryon han sa rang
A vague love which disappears with a wind

peor hae ye ji de sa ra chyo ka na
Would be gone as if a star falls?

A love which would not end even if all the oceans are combined

chong sang e sae kyo mi wo do kop da
Is engraved on a blue skirt, which is mean but beautiful

nop ko ner jin ha ne ri na do ro ham ke sar ja ha do ra
The high and drooping heaven told me to live together

kip ko hom han pa da ro sa ra u nier che sa rang un
My love which will live and weep like a deep and rough sea

cho kang er e wo he re ri
Will flow surrounding the Cho River

English and Chinese translation from the Korean OST CD Insert:

Icy shades of blue
I’ve been true to you
Shaped my world on “soon”
Prayed to ghostly moons

Deep and dark it preys
Bleak and stark, in greys
Love’s a shark at bay
Til your heart’s betrayed

Oh, the curse of men and war
My hero’s cry is empty, forlorn
(But) in the silence I conceed (sic)
My heart can’t flee
This hopeless dream must be or vanish
Foolish love

Once you promised distant shore
And oe’r the waves you’d lift me once more
Now my pain brings no reward
Your fate’s bound and sworn

From afar I wish you near
And with each breath, I tremble with fear
For in spite of how I bleed
My heart can’t flee
This hopeless dream must be or vanish
Foolish love

[End segment (sic)]
My heart can’t flee
This foolish love

Onara Lyric and Translation

July 10, 2005

오나라 《呼唤》 is the episode ending’s theme song, sang by three Korean children Kim Ji-Hyeon 金智贤 (13), Baek Bo-Hyeon 白宝贤 (11), Kim Seul-gi 金露姬 (10). They are elementary schoolers who are learning Korean classic music. The song was composed by Im Se Hyun (林世賢). It’s also called Ja-Ya-o-Ga. There are another 2 versions of the songs in the Dae Jang Geum OST (other than track #4), at track #16 which is a techno mix of the 3 children singing, and the slow version, sung by Yi-an at track #14. She is a 23-year-old Korean traditional folk singer who graduated from Korean classic music department of Seoul National University first on the list. O-na-ra was her debut song.

Come! Come! Come to stay. (Would he come would he come, if I told him to come?)

Leave! Leave! Leave for good. (Would he go, would he go, if I told him to go?)

na na ni ta ryo do mou no na ni
Even we fly around to pass by, we cannot play around together. (Even if I wait a thousand years we could never keep accompany)

a ni ri a ni ri a ni no ne
No! No! We cannot stay together! (No, no, we could never be)

he i ya di i ya he i ya na ra ni no
La la la (Koreans “choo-im-sae”, fill in to stimulate the feeling of the song)

o ji do mo ta na ta ryo ka ma
Even though you will not come, I will go! (You might as well take me out of here, since he won’t come)

he i ya di i ya he i ya na ra ni no
La la la

Even though you will not come, I will go!

This song is from a traditional korean genre called “pansori”. It’s very heavy and sad. The language used in this song is unintelligible to the majority of Koreans as well, as is in the form of an ancient Korean poem, and when Daejanggeum aired, people were perplexed as to what the song might mean.

There are a few explanations of the meaning of the songs. One is that this is a sad song depicting the hearts of palace maids in Joseon Dynasty era in which they spend their whole lives hoping the king will notice her. The king cannot come and go as she wishes, and she feels sad that he does not know her love for him. It’s a regret for the maid since now she has to grow old all alone without ever having a relationship with the king. Most will never even get the king’s attention, they would tell themselves ‘oh nuh ra oh nuh ra ah joo oh ra’ (come come really come) as a good luck to themselves.

Another explanation try to probe the meaning behind the song.

因為 人們來過此地,所以不是永遠停留此地;

Which literally means, because he comes here before, that’s why he is not staying here forever, because he leaves here, that’s why he is not leaving here forever. Just like the theme of Dae Jang Geum drama, let go of self egoism, humbly accept the reality of the human life: the up and down of human life, alive and dead…
